Out the red gate, right, and the lane runs straight toward the sound of it. Eight minutes on foot: white block walls on one side, a hedge of palms and the odd empty lot on the other, chickens, a dog that considers you and decides you're not worth the effort. No pavement, no traffic, nothing between the villa and the Pacific except one sandy cut through a line of wooden fences and a couple of palapas that sell beer and pescado in season.

The lane. Right out of the gate and keep walking toward the noise.

Then the fence ends and the whole thing opens up. Black volcanic sand, the colour of wet ash, and a shore break that does not stop. Nobody on it. Not a towel, not a vendor, not a single footprint that wasn't mine. This is the coast the World Junior surfing championship is being held on, a few minutes down the road, and on a Tuesday afternoon in low season it belongs to whoever bothers to walk down.

I shot the whole thing twice — a chest camera for the straight-ahead view and the 360 on a pole for everything else — and cut it down to forty seconds, because that's about how long it takes to understand why a villa with a tube TV and a possum in the roof is worth staying in for a month.

The beach as a tiny planet. That red dot is me.

The walk back is uphill by exactly nothing. The lane, the gate, the rancho with the hammocks under the big tree, and a pool that's still warm at midnight. That's the commute.

Back to the rancho.

Ledger: nothing. The beach is free, which is the whole point.
