Our Story

Why Vastura Travel exists — the best operators are never at the top of the list, so we go and find them.

A promoter for the little guy.

Somewhere on the island there's a dive guide who has known that reef since he was nine. He knows where the eagle rays feed in March. He has never lost a diver. On any measure that matters, he is the best operator in town.

He is on page four.

The three shops above him didn't out-dive him. They didn't out-teach him or out-care him. They outbid him. So a traveller saves for a year, flies four thousand miles, books whoever was at the top, has a perfectly fine week — and flies home never knowing he existed.

Two people got robbed in that story, and neither of them will ever find out.

Vastura Travel exists to interrupt it.

What we actually do

We go and find the operators the ad money buries. Then we do the three things nobody else bothers with.

We check they're real. Registered, licensed, trading under the name on the sign. It sounds basic. It isn't — and if you've ever paid a deposit to a business that turned out not to exist, you already know why we start here.

We turn up. Not a form, not a phone call. Someone stands on the boat, in the kitchen, in the room. We take our own photographs and we score what's in front of us against criteria we've published, so you can check our work and so two different assessors land in the same place.

We come back as a customer. Unannounced, at full price, saying nothing. Because how a place treats a guest it's expecting is a different question from how it treats one it isn't. Then we do it again every year, because a good week in 2026 tells you nothing about 2028.

Then we publish it, whatever it says

You will see the 4s as well as the 9s.

That's the part that costs us something, and it's the part that makes the rest worth reading. If a place disappoints us we publish that too — the score, the date, and the criteria it was measured against. An honest low score doesn't get an operator removed. Being listed here isn't the prize. Being listed and scoring well is, and there's exactly one way to do that.

Money buys a listing. It never buys a rating. Operators pay a flat subscription for exposure and for their own assessment report. That subscription has never moved a score and never will. When you book flights or beds through the links on this site, the booking platforms pay us a commission — that's how the lights stay on, and it's why those links live on our trip-planning pages and never next to a scorecard.

What we're not

We're not inspectors. We're not a regulator and we don't certify anybody. We have no authority over anyone we assess and we don't want any.

We're customers who paid full price, showed up, and wrote down what happened — against standards we published first so you can hold us to them. That's a smaller claim than most sites make. It's also one we can actually keep.

Who this is for

If you're travelling: you get to see the real thing before you commit a week of your life to it. Per-criterion, dated, honest — including the parts that aren't flattering, and including the listings we haven't got to yet, which we mark plainly as awaiting onsite evaluation rather than quietly padding out.

If you run something good: you already know the places above you aren't better than you. They just paid more. We can't outspend the booking giants on your behalf — but we can go and see you, tell the truth about what you do, and hand you a dated report on your own service that's worth having whether or not anyone else ever reads it.

Being findable shouldn't be something you have to buy.

Who started this

Vastura Travel was started by Robert McGlynn, a Canadian who spent forty years building things — trades, farms, small businesses — mostly in places where the nearest town has one of everything, and everybody already knows which one is actually any good.

That's where this comes from. In a small place a reputation takes years, it's earned in front of people who'd know if you were faking it, and there is no way to buy one. Then the internet turned up, sold the top of the list to whoever paid the most, and a lot of people who'd spent a lifetime earning something real discovered it counted for nothing against a credit card.

He also built the software this company runs on — the books, the tickets, the scheduling — for the straightforward reason that a small company can't hire a back office. Six businesses run on it now. Same instinct both times: if the thing you need doesn't exist, go and build it.

The first assessments are his, in person, starting in El Salvador. But the criteria are published, and that's deliberate — the method is written down so that it doesn't have to stay his. Two people following it should land within a point of each other. That's the test of whether a standard is real, and it's the only way a promise like this one outlives the person who made it.

We’re on the ground in El Salvador now. First assessments publish from La Libertad this month.
